DNV has played an important part in the launching of Eurocontrol’s new “SKYbrary” website. The new wiki-style site aims to be the single point of reference, globally, for aviation safety knowledge.

With ever-changing information in Europe’s aviation and air traffic control industry and stakeholders across nearly 40 countries, a single point of reference was needed. Eurocontrol, the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation, selected DNV for help. The result was the SKYbrary website, an in-depth, well organised, source of information for aviation professionals.

The DNV connection
DNV’s involvement is three-pronged. Beginning with concept development, the idea of creating a wiki-knowledge site (similar to wikipedia, but with assured quality of information) was formed. Next was the design and development phase, with the website launched on 9 May. Now that SKYbrary is up and running, DNV is responsible for further site maintenance.

“Response to the site has been very positive,” says DNV’s Principal Consultant in Knowledge Management, Eelco Kruizinga. “Internally in Eurocontrol, the site has been viewed as a positive step forward in sharing information with the outside world. And the user base for the site is growing every day.”

The Director General of Eurocontrol, David McMillan, shared his thoughts on SKYbrary at the meeting of Eurocontrol’s Provisional Council saying, “SKYbrary is an accurate, exciting, and well designed webpage, using modern technology to create a unique resource for the aviation community.”

Eelco Kruizinga says this project could be a launching point for DNV. “It’s a good idea for DNV to create these wiki-based knowledge platforms in other safety domains as well. The SKYbrary reference will hopefully lead to similar jobs in the future.
