Most navigational equipment is included in the Marine Equipment Directive (MED) established by the European Union and adopted by the International Marine Organisation (IMO). Section for Nautical Safety is performing Type Approval according to MED and other international or DNV rules for all equipment that are used for navigational purposes.
Type of equipment can be such as Radar, Electronic Chart systems, Voyage Data recorders, speed logs and echo sounders but it can also be equipment as navigational lights, sun screens, window wipers and different kind of indicators.
The type approval process will typically entail design assessment based on manuals and test reports from environmental testing. In addition functional tests often are required to prove conformity with the relevant performance standard. Some of these functional tests can, as the environmental tests, be performed at recognized laboratories, but commonly are the tests performed on a ship or at the manufacturer and witnessed by a qualified DNV surveyor.
