We carry out Design Review, Type Approval and MED-certification of all types of launching and retrieval equipment for life saving.

Launching and retrieval equipment for life saving could be:

• Lifeboat davits and rescue boat davits.
• Fast rescue boat davits.
• Free-fall davits.
• Life raft cranes/davits.
• Release mechanisms for life-rescue boats.
• Release mechanisms for life-rafts.
• Winches for lifesaving.

DNVs type approval of life-saving appliances in accordance with SOLAS requires the following procedure:

• Design approval.
• Manufacturing survey.
• Type testing.

For the EU Marine Equipment Directive the approval/certification process may have different combinations of involvement from DNV, depending on the customer’s priorities.

The Type Approval Certificates enables the manufacturers to utilise the approval for an unlimited number of orders within an agreed time window.

In addition to the type testing, each unit of equipment manufactured must be separately tested before installation on board. Furthermore, each unit is also to be subjected to functional testing after installation on board.
