Special features notation for vessels designed for 100% filling of specified tanks with a heavy liquid.
Tanks for crude oil or bunker fuel must normally be designed for liquids whose density is equal to that of sea water, taken as r = 1.025 t/m³ (i.e. r g0 ≈ 10). Tanks for heavier liquids may be approved after special consideration.
The vessel is verified as being strengthened to carry heavy liquid in tanks.
Vessels designed for 100% filling of specified tanks with a heavier liquid will be given the notation HL(r), indicating the highest cargo density applied as the basis for approval.
The density upon which the scantlings of individual tanks are based will be given in the appendix to the classification certificate.
Approval is based on design drawings produced by a yard or a designer acting on behalf of a yard.
