Over the past few decades less funding has been made available for corrosion-related research and development, which is significant in light of the costs of maintaining aging infrastructure. In fact, several government and corporate research laboratories have significantly reduced their corrosion research staff or even have closed their research facilities. Moreover, less research and development funding has been available both from government and private sources. An estimate of an annual academic budget of $20 million was made, while no estimates were made of the cost of corporate corrosion-related research.
